Sustainability and Everyman: Student Documentary to Screen at Schweitzer Lakedance International Film Festival

Sept. 10, 2008

MOSCOW, Idaho – Filmmaker Laurel Scheiwe believes that living a sustainable lifestyle does not require a 180 degree change of behavior. The University of Idaho senior has documented how small daily choices cumulatively can pack significant environmental wallop.

“A lot of people think that in order to be environmentally friendly and be sustainable they’re going to have to do research and make these huge changes in their life,” said Scheiwe, a senior advertising major in the School of Journalism and Mass Media (JAMM). “But small changes make a great impact.”

Scheiwe’s documentary “A Sustainable Day in the Life,” has been chosen to screen at the Schweitzer Lakedance International Film Festival at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Panida Theater in Sandpoint.

Scheiwe is the first University of Idaho student to have a film screened at the growing festival, which was established in 2006. Her 10-minute documentary follows a former Idaho student through his day, chronicling his choices and their implications.

“Laurel is a very organized and thoughtful producer and director,” said Denise Bennett, JAMM senior instructor. “The film has a strong character that leads the story. He’s very likable, kind of an everyman.”

The film’s original audience was college students, said Bennett, but the message is for everyone. “We’re not a giant corporation polluting the rivers, but we can make a difference in how much we’re using and how much we’re recycling.”

“The point of following an average guy is to point out what anybody can do,” said Scheiwe. “You don’t have to make drastic changes in your life to be sustainable.”

“A Sustainable Day in the Life,” was a collaborative project by students in JAMM 475, Digital Media Thesis Production, and the University of Idaho Sustainability Center.
