MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho College of Education graduate programs have been ranked in the nation's top 100 by U.S. News & World Report in the schools of education category. The U.S. News rankings help students narrow their search for schools by location, tuition, school size and test scores.

“The most important factor in this rating is the overall reputation of the college,” said Dean Paul Rowland. “We now are ranked in the top third of graduate schools of education in the nation, tied with Illinois State, UNC-Charlotte and UW-Milwaukee.”

Graduate programs at 278 schools granting doctoral degrees were surveyed. Of the 241 that responded, 238 provided the data needed to calculate the rankings. The top 126 schools are ranked.

A college education may be one of the most important and costly investments a person will make. The U.S. News rankings are intended to serve as an objective guide for potential students and help them make informed decisions. The ranking process is based 60 percent on a formula that uses objective measures of academic quality, and the remaining 40 percent on a survey of college deans and school superintendents. Ultimately, rankings condense a large amount of information about the quality of education at a school, making it easier for potential students to make comparisons.

To be included in the rankings, a college or university must be regionally accredited and have a total enrollment of at least 200 students

Indicators used to measure academic quality fall into four broad areas: peer and superintendent assessment; student selectivity; faculty resources, and research activity. The University of Idaho College of Education score was 48 out of a possible score of 100, ranking it as number 87 on the list.
