UI, WSU Begin Search For New Director of WWAMI Medical Education Program

MOSCOW – The University of Idaho and Washington State University have begun the search for a new director of the regional medical education program they provide through the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Former director of the Washington-Wyoming-Alaska-Montana-Idaho (WWAMI) medical education program on the Palouse, Mike Laskowski is stepping down after 14 years in the position. He will continue both teaching and his research in nerve regeneration, but will leave his administrative post effective June 30, 2003.

WWAMI is operated in cooperation with the University of Washington School of Medicine and includes education of nearly 40 first-year medical students, as well as clinical and outreach programs throughout Idaho and eastern Washington. The director is responsible for administering a first-year medical curriculum at UI and WSU in coordination with UW. Screening of candidates will begin Nov. 30 and continue until the position is filled.

Larry Forney, chair of the UI Department of Biological Sciences, and Ron Brosemer, a professor in the WSU School of Molecular BioSciences, will chair the nationwide search. Other committee members include:

Dr. Jim Blackman, clinical coordinator for the Idaho WWAMI Clinical Medical Education Program

Greg Bohach, chair of the UI Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (MMBB) Department

Dr. Phil Cleveland, clinical coordinator for the eastern Washington WWAMI Clinical Medical Education Program

Vince Franceschi, director of the WSU School of Biological Sciences

Lee Fortunato, faculty in the UI MMBB Department

Dr. Dan Hunt, associate dean of the University of Washington School of Medicine

Dr. Sara Lawrence, a physician with Moscow Family Medicine

Dr. Tom Norwood, a faculty member at the UW School of Medicine and

Mary Sanchez-Lanier, associate dean of the WSU College of Sciences.
