MOSCOW, Idaho – With graduation looming on the horizon, many college seniors are scrambling to find full-time jobs. University of Idaho senior Courtney Sorensen is enjoying her last few weeks of school already having secured a job seven months before graduation.
Sorensen, a triple-major in production operations management, management and human resources and information systems from Shoshone, Idaho, was hired as a procurement agent for Boeing’s Integrated Defense Systems in October 2007 at the Fall Career Expo of the Palouse. After talking to Boeing representatives at the Expo, she was asked to interview with the company two days later. Fifteen minutes after her interview ended, she was offered a full-time position.
“I was shocked that 15 minutes after a non-technical interview they were able to make the decision to offer a job to someone who was seven months away from graduation,” Sorensen said. “I really expected it to take a couple more weeks, a few more rounds of interviews and maybe a tour of their facilities.”
According to Boeing’s Web site, their Integrated Defense Systems “combines weapons and aircraft capabilities, intelligence and surveillance systems, communications architectures and extensive large-scale integration expertise.” Boeing’s Integrated Defense Systems is a $32.1 billion business with 71,000 employees worldwide.
As a procurement agent, Sorensen will be responsible for the procurement of goods and services and the enforcement of contract terms and conditions. Her position does require confidentiality because she will deal with intellectual property.
Sorensen participated in two internships at Micron prior to her senior year at the University of Idaho, which was instrumental in her future career decision.
“Internships allow you to get a feel for what you may or may not want to do,” Sorensen said. “My coursework became more real through my internships and it also gave me an example to reflect back on when I returned to school. After my internship, I knew I didn’t want to do production for an extended time.”
Sorensen starts her new job in July, but before that she’ll embark on one more adventure with the College of Business and Economics. The day after graduation, Sorensen will join a group of CBE students for two weeks on a trip to Italy as part of the International Business Experience.
“I’ve been in school for five years, so I’m excited for a change of pace,” Sorensen said. “I will miss having that personal connection with faculty. They really empower students and make you feel like you can do anything.”
