McCall Outdoor Science School Offers Summer Environmental Education to Idaho Students, Teachers
By Sue McMurray
McCALL, Idaho – The McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS) is offering two new summer science programs focusing on climate and water research in Idaho. Both programs are located at the University of Idaho McCall Field Campus in McCall, Idaho.
A youth program, which runs July 6-12, targets Idaho teens who love the outdoors and science. All junior high and high school students who fall into that category may register for a week-long science field experience, where they will participate in hands-on learning about current climate and water research topics. Youth participants will be mentored by University of Idaho graduate student AmeriCorps members who are collaborating with other scientists on National Science Foundation projects.
"This program gives kids opportunities to explore Idaho’s back country, conduct real research, make new friends and learn new skills,” said Steven Hollenhorst, MOSS director. “This experience also may enhance their college applications.”
Registration for the youth program is $117 per student. Students must pre-register by contacting MOSS at (208) 634-3918 or e-mail info@mossidaho.org.
A summer teacher institute will be offered June 26-29 and is designed to help Idaho school teachers integrate climate and water research into their curriculum. Teachers will spend a long weekend on Payette Lake and explore climate and water research topics alongside university scientists.
Teacher institute participants will receive a $100 travel stipend. Space is limited to 20 participants; pre-registration is required by contacting MOSS at (208) 634-3918 or e-mail info@mossidaho.org. University of Idaho credit is available at additional cost.
The Paul G. Allen Foundation, the National Science Foundation EPSCoR Program, the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute and Ponderosa State Park collaboratively support these MOSS summer programs.
